La Bohème

Martin Puryear Retrospective
Through January 25, 2009

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) presents Martin Puryear, a major retrospective of sculpture by the acclaimed American artist. The exhibition features 47 sculptures made from a variety of natural materials that chart the development of Puryear's career over the last 30 years, from his first solo show in 1977 to the present day.

Latino Film Festival

Hewitt Collection: African-American Art
Through January 11, 2009

Bank of America presents an exhibition of 54 works from the Hewitt Collection, regarded as one of the most significant collections of African-American art of the 20th century. The exhibit includes works from 20 artists, including Romare Bearden, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Elizabeth Catlett, Jonathan Green, Jacob Lawrence, Ann Tanksley and Hale Woodruff.

California Presidential

This timely exhibition examines the history of California's presidential candidates and the important role the state has played in presidential elections. Developed in partnership with the Northern California chapter of the American Political Items Collectors, the exhibit highlights California's colorful presidential history.

San Francisco World Music Festival
Through November 23, 2008

This music festival showcases the musical diversity from around the globe with master artists from traditional to contemporary styles. This year's festival, themed "The Reeds Give Way to the Wind," will feature various reed instruments, such as accordion, suona, and sheng, from several cultures, including Azerbaijani, Chinese, Italian and Laz.

Salute to Composer Leonard Bernstein
November 20-December 14, 2008

The JCCSF salutes Leonard Bernstein, the American icon and musical genius, whose Jewish voice reverberated throughout every piece he wrote, conducted or taught. The series of exciting events includes free showings of the documentary film Reaching for the Note, Bernstein's famous Harvard Lectures and a series of musical performances.

Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures
Through January 15, 2009

This exhibition includes nearly 230 priceless artifacts from the National Museum, Kabul thought to be lost, stolen or destroyed during years of conflict before being rediscovered intact in 2003. It explores the rich cultural heritage of ancient Afghanistan from the Bronze Age through the rise of trade along the Silk Road in the first century A.D..
